Cody’s Story

Success...

Cody came to Kane Humane along with Goldie in September of 2008. They were found starving in Marble Canyon by some tourists passing through. They brought the dogs to the Travel Center in Kanab who in turn contacted Kane Humane. Both dogs were picked up and placed in a foster home on Cedar Mountain. In November they were brought down to another foster home in the Kanab area. In March the people fostering Cody and Goldie notified Kane Humane that they were moving and could no longer foster them. All of Kane Humane’s foster homes were full, so Best Friends Animal Society agreed to take them both. Cody’s name was then changed to Oakley and in a few months he was adopted from Best Friends and is now known as ”Cody” again! Many thanks to Best Friends for helping Kane Humane and finding Cody his forever home.
His new family tells the rest.
Cody is settling in and learning the "ropes" here at  home.  Slept all the way home on the back seat of the car the night he arrived.  So far he is a good boy - but very  interested in all the birds around here.  Chasing crows  away from the garden will be one of his "jobs" once we are sure he will come when he's called.  It's a job all our  other dogs had taken very seriously.  Hey, a guy has to chase SOMETHING!!  Cats are off limits, so are rabbits, so birds are IT!

Cody has had a bath - water, YUK!  Got about half the sand out of him.  We'll do it again in a couple of weeks.  We've been trying him out on things to see what he knows and where he is comfortable.  We are working on the "no howling at night" thing.  Much better last night.
He is also learning about a crate, since he will be traveling with us this summer.  His rug is his favorite spot.  He really seems to need a rug to be comfortable indoors.  Maybe someone who fostered him had a "rug" requirement in their home?  Give him a rug to lie on and he goes to sleep right away, or lies there looking at what is going on.  Next week he will "meet" the travel trailer, when we start loading it for the summer.
He's met the cats - all three of them.  Cats?  Boring!!  Outside cats are really "ho-hum".  The indoor cat is much like Chris's cat Fred, so they have their own space and mostly ignore each other.  Cat's food is OFF LIMITS for Cody and Cody's food is OFF LIMITS for the cats.  Simple.  The cats eat "up" and he eats on the floor.  Mostly he takes his house food in his crate and eats it.  Funny to watch him haul his dish around.
So far, so good.  We think he will be just fine here.  AND he loves his long walks with Dad!
Last night he did not howl, BUT he had not finished his dinner, so he had his bedtime snack waiting for him when he went to bed.  He always takes his food bowl to his bed and lies down with it between his feet to eat.  He has a really large bed - a pillow-bed that belonged to our former Golden Retriever.  We just bought a new cover for it - so there's plenty of room for both Cody and his food dish on it.  Will remember to give him a bedtime snack so he won't howl at night.  Maybe that comes from being starved and miserable at night in his earlier life before being rescued??  At our house he has several rugs to sleep on: one in the kitchen, one in the den, one on his outdoor porch, and one on the back seat of the truck.  Ah, rug heaven!
